The Turkmen community in Afghanistan’s western province of Herat held a cultural ceremony to mark the anniversary of the renowned 18th-century classical poet and philosopher, Magtymguly Pyragy, at the Directorate of Information and Culture in Herat.
The event was organized by the Turkmen Association of Afghanistan, bringing together cultural figures, poets, academics, and university professors to highlight the literary and philosophical legacy of Magtymguly Pyragy, who is widely regarded as one of the most influential voices in Turkmen literature.
Speaking at the ceremony, Abdul Rahman Ahmad Oghli, head of the Turkmen Association of Afghanistan, described Magtymguly Pyragy as a major literary figure whose poetry emphasizes unity, solidarity, and social cohesion. He said the poet’s work is not only significant for Turkmen communities but also serves as a symbol of harmony for people across the region.
Academic Abdul Latif Mohammadi also addressed the gathering, noting that Magtymguly Pyragy belongs not only to a single ethnic group or language but to a broader cultural heritage. He emphasized that the poet’s ideas have been reflected across multiple cultures and that his spiritual and philosophical writings remain influential and enduring. He added that while Magtymguly authored many works, much of his literary heritage has been lost over time due to periods of instability, with his divan (collection of poetry) remaining his most complete surviving work.
Magtymguly Pyragy is considered one of the most prominent classical poets of the Turkmen language. His works have been translated into multiple languages and continue to hold a respected place in the region’s cultural memory.
Turkmen Population and Social Activity in Afghanistan
According to the Turkmen Association of Afghanistan, a survey conducted in 2003 estimated that approximately three million Turkmens live across Afghanistan.
The association’s leadership says Turkmens are actively engaged in various sectors of Afghan society, ranging from sports to economic activities. The community currently supports dozens of sports teams in football, volleyball, and wrestling, alongside traditional economic enterprises.
In Herat, Turkmen communities are also involved in small-scale carpet weaving workshops, contributing to the region’s well-known handicraft industry.
Abdul Rahman Ahmad Oghli, who has served as head of the Turkmen Association of Afghanistan since 2009, said the community continues to work on strengthening cultural identity while contributing to broader social and economic development in the country.
