HERAT, Afghanistan — Salt extraction will begin at seven mine blocks in Ghorian district within two days, local authorities said, aiming to drive economic activity and create jobs in western Herat province.

Officials project the creation of about 1,500 direct jobs, a significant boost for local livelihoods and labor market stability.

Abdul Wahed Kateb, Director of the Herat Department of Mines and Petroleum, stated that the initiative is part of a broader strategy to develop Afghanistan’s natural resources in a structured, economically sustainable manner. He noted that the expansion of mining activities is intended to accelerate regional economic growth, attract investment, and reduce unemployment.

Kateb said Herat currently oversees dozens of mining sites in different phases of exploration, extraction, and contractual development, reflecting the province’s growing role in Afghanistan’s extractive industry.

“Currently, two coal mines, two marble quarries, one lead mine, four iron ore deposits, one barite mine, and the Zinda Jan mining project are undergoing active exploration,” he said, highlighting the province’s diverse and commercially significant mineral reserves.

The Herat Department of Mines and Petroleum also reported a notable increase in mining revenues, stating that the sector generated more than 318 million Afghanis (AFN) during the solar Hijri year 1404. Officials described the figure as evidence of expanding mining operations, increasing investor confidence, and rising economic activity within the province’s natural resources sector.

Residents in Herat have largely welcomed the expansion of regulated and transparent mining operations, expressing hope that improved resource management will contribute to sustainable economic development, infrastructure growth, and long-term employment opportunities, particularly for young people.

Herat province is considered one of Afghanistan’s resource-rich regions, with substantial confirmed reserves of salt, marble, coal, iron ore, lead, barite, gypsum, limestone, and a range of precious and semi-precious gemstones.
