Two rural water supply projects funded by the Government of South Korea and implemented by UNICEF, in cooperation with the Ghor Department of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (DRRD), have been completed in Firozkoh, the capital of Afghanistan’s central Ghor province, local officials said.
The projects were implemented in the villages of Shomal Badgah and Sokhta Ulya at a cost of more than 16 million Afghanis (approximately US$225,000). The initiative aims to improve access to safe drinking water in one of Afghanistan’s most underserved provinces, where many communities continue to face chronic water shortages.
Zabihullah Ghawsi Zada, head of the media office at the Ghor DRRD, said the projects have provided 514 families with access to safe drinking water and created temporary employment opportunities for local residents during construction.
According to Ghawsi Zada, the projects included the construction of four water storage reservoirs with a combined capacity of 80 cubic meters, the installation of 238 water taps, and the laying of 26,329 meters of water pipelines.
Local authorities thanked community members for their cooperation throughout the implementation process and urged residents to protect and properly maintain the newly constructed water supply systems to ensure their long-term sustainability.
Residents of the two villages also welcomed the completion of the projects, saying they would help ease longstanding water shortages and improve public health. Community members pledged to take responsibility for maintaining the infrastructure.
Ghor is one of Afghanistan’s least developed provinces, where access to safe drinking water remains a significant challenge in many rural communities. Humanitarian agencies have continued to invest in water infrastructure projects across the province to improve living conditions and reduce the risk of waterborne diseases.
