Pakistani media outlets have reported that 724 trucks carrying humanitarian aid have entered Afghanistan through the Torkham border crossing.
Pakistan Today, citing Muhammad Yahya, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Pakistan, reported that the trucks were carrying critical relief supplies for families in need in Afghanistan.
The border crossings between Pakistan and Afghanistan have remained closed for months amid political and security tensions between the two countries. However, the United Nations and other humanitarian organizations have been working to facilitate the passage of aid convoys into Afghanistan.
In response to the UN announcement, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, said that Islamabad supports the humanitarian effort and has cooperated in facilitating the delivery of assistance to families in need in Afghanistan.
Last month, 21 of 26 trucks carrying aid from the World Food Programme (WFP) also entered Afghanistan through the Torkham crossing.
