Health authorities in Afghanistan’s western Farah province have destroyed 200 cartons of medical bandages imported from Iran after laboratory tests found they did not meet required safety standards.
Miajan Hassanzai, head of the Food and Drug Department at the Farah Public Health Directorate, said the shipment entered Afghanistan through the Sheikh Abu Nasr Farahi border crossing.
According to Hassanzai, all imported medical products undergo mandatory quality inspections before being cleared for distribution. Products that fail to meet safety and quality standards are destroyed to prevent them from reaching the market.
He said laboratory testing found the bandages were contaminated with harmful bacteria, making them unsafe for medical use and posing a potential risk of infection if applied to patients’ wounds.
Afghan health authorities have previously destroyed shipments of imported food products and medical supplies that failed to comply with the country’s quality and safety requirements.
