Afghanistan and Turkmenistan have signed an agreement on the purchase of natural gas under the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline project.
The agreement was signed between Afghan Gas and Turkmen Gas in the presence of Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs of Afghanistan, and Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, National Leader of Turkmenistan, in the Torghundi border area of Herat province.
According to Afghanistan’s Deputy Prime Minister’s Office for Economic Affairs, the agreement will determine the price of the gas, Afghanistan’s gas requirements, and the mechanism for its distribution.
The signing ceremony was held during a meeting between senior officials from Afghanistan and Turkmenistan in Torghundi, where the two sides also discussed the latest progress in the implementation of the TAPI project.
Officials said that 120 kilometers of the 153-kilometer section of the TAPI pipeline planned for Herat province have so far been laid.
The TAPI project is designed to transport natural gas from Turkmenistan through Afghanistan to Pakistan and India and is considered one of the region’s major energy and infrastructure projects.
