The local administration of Herat has announced the completion and official approval of the detailed master plan for the Islam Qala border crossing, a major step aimed at improving urban planning, expanding commercial infrastructure, and standardizing essential facilities at one of Afghanistan’s busiest border ports.
According to a statement released by the Herat Governor’s Office, the master plan was developed following comprehensive technical studies that assessed current and future requirements, population growth, commercial activities, transportation networks, and urban expansion.
The plan includes a modern road network, commercial and service zones, public facilities, green spaces, transportation infrastructure, water supply systems, and other essential urban services designed in accordance with national planning standards.
Officials said the project’s implementation is expected to strengthen urban management at the Islam Qala border crossing, regulate land use, create new investment opportunities, facilitate trade flows, improve transportation services, and provide standardized municipal services.
Herat is widely recognized as one of Afghanistan’s most important economic provinces and serves as the country’s leading industrial hub. The province has two major international border crossings: Islam Qala, which connects Afghanistan with Iran, and Torghundi, which links the country with Turkmenistan.
Every day, hundreds of cargo trucks pass through these border crossings, transporting goods between Afghanistan and regional and international markets. The two ports play a vital role in facilitating trade, supporting economic growth, and strengthening Afghanistan’s commercial connectivity with neighboring countries and the wider world.
