HERAT, Afghanistan — Herat Governor Noor Ahmad Islamjar has called for an expansion of commercial freight traffic along the Khaf–Herat railway, highlighting the corridor’s growing importance in facilitating trade and regional connectivity between Afghanistan and Iran.

During a meeting with Mostafa Rezaei, head of the Iranian Railway Development Consortium in Afghanistan, Islamjar emphasized the need to further strengthen and develop railway operations on the route, describing the Khaf–Herat railway as a vital transit and trade corridor connecting Afghanistan to regional and international markets through Iran.

The governor announced that the Rabat Paryan railway station is expected to become operational in the near future, a move that is expected to improve logistics and increase the efficiency of cargo transportation along the route.

Islamjar also urged the consortium to increase the volume of goods transported through the railway, reaffirming the Herat provincial administration’s commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at expanding the corridor’s capacity and enhancing cross-border trade.

Rezaei, in turn, expressed appreciation for the cooperation and support provided by the Herat local administration and pledged to increase the railway’s freight-handling capacity to 150,000 metric tons per month in the coming months.

He further assured officials that efforts are underway to accelerate the transportation and export of Afghan products through the railway network to destination markets, helping facilitate trade flows and strengthen Afghanistan’s economic links with the wider region.

The Khaf–Herat railway has emerged as one of Afghanistan’s most important rail transport corridors, serving as a key gateway for trade with Iran and providing access to broader international transport networks.
