Afghanistan’s national futsal team concluded its campaign at the 2026 Continental Futsal Championship in Thailand with an emphatic 6-1 victory over New Zealand in its final match of the tournament.
The win marked Afghanistan’s first and only victory of the competition after opening the tournament with defeats to hosts Thailand and Vietnam before earning a hard-fought 3-3 draw against Russia.
The tournament also marked the first competition under newly appointed head coach Dejan Dedović, who took charge of the national team ahead of the Continental Futsal Championship. Despite a difficult start, Afghanistan showed steady improvement throughout the event, finishing with an impressive performance against New Zealand.
The Continental Futsal Championship, held in Thailand from August 1 to 6, featured five participating teams: Afghanistan, Thailand, Vietnam, Russia, and New Zealand. The tournament served as an important preparation event for teams ahead of upcoming international competitions.
Afghanistan’s convincing victory over New Zealand provided a positive conclusion to Dedović’s first tournament in charge and offered encouraging signs for the team’s future development under the Serbian coach.
