HERAT, Afghanistan — Afghanistan has exported its first shipment of lamb to Iran through the western province of Herat, marking a new step in the country’s livestock trade.
Under an agreement with an Iranian company, approximately 100 metric tons of lamb will be exported. The first shipment, consisting of 7 metric tons, has already been delivered to Iran.
Hafizullah Bahadari, head of the exporting company, said all sheep are slaughtered at the Herat municipal abattoir in accordance with established hygiene and quality standards. The meat is then professionally packaged before being transported to Iran.
According to Bahadari, the remaining shipments, totaling around 100 metric tons, are expected to be exported over the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, representatives of Herat’s butchers’ association said they are prepared to expand meat exports to other countries, particularly to Afghanistan’s neighboring markets, if suitable export opportunities arise.
Officials and traders say abundant rainfall during the past winter and spring created favorable grazing conditions, contributing to improved livestock production and making this year especially suitable for the livestock sector.
