A five-day exhibition featuring the work of artists and cultural figures has been held inside the historic Ikhtiyaruddin Citadel in Herat to mark World Tourism Day.

The exhibition was organized by the Herat Directorate of Information and Culture in cooperation with the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA). It features artworks, handicrafts and traditional local foods and will run for five days.

Mohammad Qasim Amini, head of the Tourism Department at the Herat Directorate of Information and Culture, told Khate-nakhost that 120 booths have been set up at the exhibition, around 70 of which have been allocated to artworks and handicrafts produced by women.

He said the exhibition features works in a range of artistic and handicraft fields, including miniature painting, prayer-bead making, glassmaking, painting and traditional local foods, among others.

Meanwhile, Kouroshat Ozdemir, head of TİKA’s office in Herat, said the agency has been organizing the Tourism Week exhibition in cooperation with the Herat Directorate of Information and Culture for the past three years, alongside its other support programs.

He said TİKA has so far implemented dozens of projects in various artistic, cultural and educational fields in Herat and neighboring provinces, adding that efforts are underway to implement additional projects.

Herat, one of Afghanistan’s historic provinces, is considered an important destination for tourists. According to figures provided by local officials, around 11,000 people visited the Ikhtiyaruddin Citadel during the first six months of the current solar year, including approximately 700 foreign tourists.
