MALE, Maldives — Afghanistan kicked off their Diamond Jubilee International Tournament campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over hosts Maldives at the National Football Stadium on Monday.
A late 81st-minute strike from international winger Roman Faiz separated the two sides in a closely contested opening match, securing crucial three points for the Lions of Khorasan.
The four-nation tournament, organized to celebrate the 75th anniversary of football in the Maldives, features Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Bangladesh U23 national team, and the host nation. Afghanistan entered the competition as a late replacement following Sri Lanka’s withdrawal.
The Afghan coaching staff utilized a balanced 23-man squad, mixing experienced overseas-based professionals with emerging domestic talents. The tactical discipline paid off late in the second half when Faiz broke the deadlock, capitalising on a defensive lapse to silence the home crowd.
With this opening victory, Afghanistan positions itself strongly at the top of the tournament table. The Lions of Khorasan will look to maintain their winning momentum as they face the Bangladesh U23 team on Thursday, June 4, before concluding their round-robin group stage against rivals Pakistan on Sunday, June 7.
