Herat – On Wednesday, June 3, 2026, coinciding with World Bicycle Day, the General Directorate of Physical Education, Sports and Olympic Affairs of Herat, the Herat Cycling Federation, and the Consulate General of Turkmenistan in Herat jointly organized a commemorative cycling event under the slogan “Long Live the Friendship Between Turkmenistan and Afghanistan.”
The program featured a mass cycling rally along the TAPI pipeline corridor, followed by a cake-cutting ceremony at the headquarters of the provincial sports directorate in Herat. Officials from both the sports and diplomatic sectors highlighted sport as an effective tool for strengthening people-to-people relations and promoting regional cooperation.
The main cycling rally took place on the morning of Wednesday, June 3, 2026, with the participation of government officials, athletes, and representatives of Turkmenistan. The 12-kilometer route ran along the Herat–Torghundi highway and the strategic alignment of the TAPI Pipeline Project, a flagship regional energy infrastructure project.
Participants included Abdul Rahim Rahmani, Director of Physical Education, Sports and Olympic Affairs of Herat; Batyr Yolov, Consul General of Turkmenistan in Herat; Begench Abdullayev, Head of the TAPI Project in Afghanistan; and Seyed Abdullah Fazli, Head of the Herat Cycling Federation, along with a group of cyclists.
Following the rally, a formal ceremony was held at the gymnasium of the provincial sports directorate. In his remarks, Rahmani congratulated participants on World Bicycle Day, describing sport as “a common language of nations and a symbol of human solidarity,” and emphasizing its role in strengthening friendly relations among neighboring countries.
He also underscored the strategic importance of regional infrastructure development, describing the TAPI project as a key initiative for economic growth and regional connectivity.
On the sidelines of the event, Afghan and Turkmen officials held discussions on expanding sports cooperation, including plans for joint competitions and cultural and sporting exchanges between the two countries.
Turkmen Consul General Batyr Yolov expressed appreciation for the continued cooperation of Herat’s sports authorities. Marking World Bicycle Day, he noted that cycling holds a special place in Turkmenistan, where it is widely celebrated as a symbol of health, friendship, and sustainable development.
He further described the cycling rally along the TAPI corridor as a meaningful initiative, adding that the pipeline project is expected to reach Herat by the end of 2026 under current planning. Yolov expressed hope that the completion of the project will eventually be celebrated jointly by the peoples of both nations in a spirit of friendship and cooperation.
World Bicycle Day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2018 at the initiative of Turkmenistan’s leadership, promoting cycling as an accessible, sustainable, and environmentally friendly mode of transport. Events such as this in Herat highlight not only the promotion of public sport but also the growing role of sports diplomacy in strengthening regional relations.
