A textile factory in Afghanistan’s western Herat province, which began operations 15 years ago, has launched a new production line for manufacturing “silk thread.”
Mohammad Shafiq Salamyar, the factory’s chief executive officer, told Khate-Nakhost that silk thread was previously imported into Afghanistan from Pakistan and China. However, with the establishment of this new production line, the company has started supplying its locally produced silk thread to markets across Afghanistan.
He said the factory’s initial investment was $100,000, but the company’s total investment has now increased to nearly $1 million.
According to Salamyar, the factory currently employs around 60 people.
Factory officials say that despite ongoing efforts to expand Afghanistan’s domestic industries, limited access to electricity and a shortage of skilled technical workers remain among the main challenges facing their operations and future growth.
