The “Behzad Miniature Painting Style,” a defining artistic tradition rooted in the historic Herat School, has been officially inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity under the name of Afghanistan. The decision was made during the 20th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, held from 8 to 13 December 2025 in New Delhi, India.
UNESCO confirmed the inscription on 9 December, recognizing the artistic and cultural importance of this refined tradition. The listing reaffirms the legacy of Kamāl-ud-Dīn Behzād—one of the most influential masters of the miniature painting tradition—and highlights Afghanistan’s enduring contribution to the development of this art form.
According to UNESCO’s official description, the Behzad miniature style remains a living tradition, taught and practiced through art institutes, workshops, and cultural centers across Afghanistan. This continued engagement ensures the preservation of the craft’s techniques, symbolism, and historic aesthetic.
Local Response in Herat
The UNESCO inscription has been warmly welcomed by artists, cultural figures, and educators in Herat—a city long regarded as one of Afghanistan’s major artistic centers. Herat hosts a rich community of painters, calligraphers, illuminators, and miniature artists, supported by numerous active training academies.
Abdul Qadeer Aslamzada, director of the “Parniyan” Art Academy in Herat, notes that miniature painting remains one of the most admired and widely practiced art forms among the city’s young artists. He explains that dozens of students at his academy are currently studying various disciplines, including painting, calligraphy, illumination, and miniature art.
Aslamzada believes that UNESCO’s recognition will bring renewed attention and long-term support to Afghanistan’s miniature artists. He says the listing could open new opportunities for cultural preservation, international collaboration, and broader appreciation of Herat’s artistic heritage.
A Cultural Milestone for Afghanistan
The inscription of the Behzad Miniature Painting Style represents a significant cultural achievement for Afghanistan. It not only acknowledges the historical influence of the Herat School but also strengthens Afghanistan’s global presence and artistic identity—ensuring that one of the region’s most iconic art traditions continues to thrive for generations to come.
