International Committee of the Red Cross Allocates 850 Cartons of Medicines for Afghan Returnees from Iran

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has allocated 850 cartons of medicines and medical supplies to assist Afghan returnees from Iran. The aid was handed over to the Afghan Red Crescent Society (ARCS) in Herat on August 10 by the ICRC’s health coordinator.

Khalil Ahmad Ghiasi, the health program coordinator for the ICRC in Herat, told Khat-e Awal that the medicines and medical supplies consist of 70 different types and will significantly contribute to addressing the healthcare needs of returnees.

He stated that the monetary value of this medical aid is 45,000 Swiss Francs (approximately 50,000 US dollars). Ghiasi emphasized that the ICRC distributes a major portion of its assistance through the Afghan Red Crescent Society. This aid comes as at least 1.5 million Afghans have been deported from Iran over the past two months. Most of the returnees have entered Afghanistan through the Islam Qala border crossing in Herat.
